No child should have to suffer, but rather grow and develop beautifully, surrounded by the love of a home and free from deprivation. Unfortunately, we cannot control everything, but we can contribute—at least a little—to bringing some joy to children with special needs.
In Domnești, Argeș County, there is the Day Center for Children and Young People with Disabilities “Equal Opportunities”, whose mission is to prevent abandonment and institutionalization of children with physical, psychological, and intellectual disabilities. The center achieves this by providing daily care activities, education, socialization, counseling, development, and preparation for social integration, as well as support, counseling, and educational activities for parents, legal representatives, and other caregivers.
The children and young people at the “Equal Opportunities” center come from socio-economically disadvantaged families and present multiple and complex diagnoses. They require behavioral rehabilitation therapies, as well as neuromotor, neuropsychomotor, and neuromuscular recovery.
Recovery programs are predefined and planned individually, depending on several factors such as age, level of development, school activities (for those enrolled in an educational system), and transportation conditions. A large number of children and young people benefit from transportation provided by the center, while others arrive independently. Similarly, the daily schedule is tailored according to their age, developmental level, potential, needs, and availability, ensuring they receive the care required for optimal development.
As mentioned at the beginning of this article, even if we cannot help everyone in need, we strive to contribute wherever possible and bring a bit of joy where we can. In October 2018, DTO contributed through a sponsorship to support the activities of the “Equal Opportunities” center. The dedicated people there responded with multiplied joy, organizing several surprises for the children and young people: a Halloween party in October, where food, games, and toys were offered; a Christmas celebration in December, when the children received various gifts; the purchase of materials in February 2019 for making traditional “mărțișor” decorations and greeting cards for March 1st and 8th; as well as Easter packages and various materials and tools necessary for therapy sessions and periodic evaluations within the center.
Below, you will find a full description of the center’s activities, as well as more information about the children and young people involved.
